How artificial intelligence can deliver real value to companies

#artificialintelligence

After decades of extravagant promises and frustrating disappointments, artificial intelligence (AI) is finally starting to deliver real-life benefits to early-adopting companies. Retailers on the digital frontier rely on AI-powered robots to run their warehouses--and even to automatically order stock when inventory runs low. Utilities use AI to forecast electricity demand. A confluence of developments is driving this new wave of AI development. Computer power is growing, algorithms and AI models are becoming more sophisticated, and, perhaps most important of all, the world is generating once-unimaginable volumes of the fuel that powers AI--data.

If you've ever played with Legos, you know the possibilities are endless. A few blocks can become a toy car. Add a few more and you've got a miniature house. Keep going and you've got an intricate city or life-size statue. The blocks themselves fit together in a near-infinite number of ways.

We should treat data as a natural resource. Here's why

#artificialintelligence

While we have made some progress towards the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we need to work even more effectively together to create and scale approaches that address global inequalities and preserve our planet's precious resources. Part of being laser-focused on the SDGs means bearing in mind the transformative technologies that now underpin modern civilization and that will help drive solutions to these issues: the new digital frontier. This frontier is based on a single resource - data - and is underpinned by constant connectivity and the disruptive power of computing. Data generation is exploding, and mainly at the edge; our phones, cars, fridges, factories, medical equipment, fields and satellites are generating unprecedented amounts of data. The promise of the new digital frontier lies in our ability to extract actionable insights from this information. By leveraging data collected from connected platforms and devices, and by processing it at the edge, organizations can tap into critical insights that can inform quicker decisions – within digital classrooms, health centres or autonomous vehicles, for example – to make our world a better, safer place.

Apply Now: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in International Development

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies, although still relatively new concepts, are garnering a vast amount of interest in international development across sectors and geographies. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)'s Center for Digital Development (CDD)'s Strategy & Research (S&R) team published a report in 2018, "Reflecting the Past, Shaping the Future: Making AI work for International Development", based on extensive research on this rapidly growing field. USAID would like to translate the report's recommendations into an actionable format so the lessons and good practices are accessible to USAID program staff and implementing partners that may have limited familiarity with, nor time, to devote to the topic. Today, the Digital Frontiers team has released a request for proposals (RFP) for qualified firms to work with Digital Frontiers and USAID's S&R team to create a modular, field-ready guidance product that translates findings from the report into concise, practical guidance for USAID staff and partners. Engineering Practical Artificial intelligent solutions in Africa

#artificialintelligence

Over the history of Science and Technology in the world, Africa has received relatively little attention compared to other regions of the world, despite notable African developments in mathematics, metallurgy, architecture, and other fields. Our Event is to shine light on the emerging advances going on in parts of Africa and speaking to leaders head on about what can be done to gain mass adoption. We will be speaking to Kevin Kissi Founder of Engineer Africa & Brian Asingia Founder of DreamGalaxy & Author of "The Last Digital Frontier"

Beyond the digital frontier

#artificialintelligence

DIGITAL transformation has become a rallying cry for business and technology strategists. To those charged with mapping the future, it promises a triumphant response to the pressures and potential of disruptive change. Yet all too often, companies anchor their approach on a specific technology advance. To fuel impactful digital transformation, leading organizations combine technology with other catalysts of new opportunities--from emerging ecosystems to human-centered design and the future of work. Because the technology trends that inspire digital transformation efforts don't take place in a vacuum. They cross-pollinate with emerging trends in the physical and social sciences and in business to deliver unexpected outcomes. Developing a systematic approach for identifying and harnessing opportunities born of the intersections of technology, science, and business is an essential first step in demystifying digital transformation, and making it concrete, achievable, and measurable. It is time to move beyond the frontier of random acts of digital.

Tech Trends 2019: Executive summary

#artificialintelligence

Looking back, we can see the value these emerging innovations offered, but in the moment, their promise seemed less clear. It is, therefore, remarkable how quickly organizations across sectors and regions navigated through the so what and into the now what for these trends and went on to successfully traverse the new digital landscape. This journey from uncertainty to digital transformation informs our latest offering, Tech Trends 2019: Beyond the digital frontier. A persistent theme of every Tech Trends report has been the increasing, often mind-bending velocity of change. A decade ago many companies could achieve competitive advantage by embracing innovations and trends that were already underway. Today, this kind of reactive approach is no longer enough. To stay ahead of the game, companies must work methodically to sense new innovations and possibilities, make sense of their ambitions for tomorrow, and find the confidence to boldly go beyond the digital frontier. So here's to the next decade of opportunity, whatever it may be. Along the way, embrace that queasy feeling of uncertainty.
